I would Give him 3 1/2 stars if I had the option, but it's not good enough for 4.

For those not familiar with Andy Remic, just know that he swears a lot in his writing, and takes pleasure in the occasional attempt at pushing the normal boundaries of conservative writing. He doesn't go that far in pushing these boundaries, he simply hints at gruesome and/or sexual scenes. For example, the hero is a grumpy old man that doesn't act that nice to people but loves his grand daughter, thus his entanglement in the story is motivated by his desire to keep her safe and kill anything that threatens that goal. He has a dark past, a past that is full of things that would certainly push the boundaries of any conservative reader, BUT this past is only hinted at, and the camera never moves too close to the scene. In this way, his attempts to push boundaries are edited before they ever get there, and all the swearing may be his attempt to go the rest of that way.

With that said, his originality in the vampire theme and where they come from is excellent, and makes the book worth reading for its own sake. He has the occasional moment of brilliance in his writing, but for the most part his prose and descriptions are mediocre. He continuously embraces cliff hanger pov shifts, e.g. He looked up as the hammer blotted out the sun and sped toward his face - BREAK, POV shift. I find this very annoying and want to tell him that he is already keeping the pace well, doesn't need to fall back on silly tricks.

He is good at keeping the pace of the story moving and the landscape is alive enough to embrace the reader most of the time. His ideas are inventive, his characters are a bit shallow, but their uniqueness can often make up for this. The book is full of violent action scenes (pg-13 variety), and he writes them pretty well. Lastly, damn, great new take on vampires.

The story is good, but must be that no one proofs the kindle edition. Two people in dialog frequently not separated by a paragraph so that it is difficult to tell who's speaking. This is a major complaint I have about eBooks...poor proofing. Try inserting a CR LF between paragraphs!

This author writes in the same story type as David Gemmel did. If you like heroic fantasy this is a series for you. Older feared ax-man trying to do good, still strong and deadly... sounds a lot like Druss from the Gemmel series, the hero of the book is called Kell. Pretty sure you can figure out where this author got a LOT of his ideas from. Good book though with some original twists, it is like he combined elements from Legend, Morning Star, and Knights of the Galbala from David Gemmel into one series....

Awesome series of books. Reads like david gemmell and full of nonstop action. A new spin on the classic vampire archetypes. Remic mixes large scale army battles with epic one man against the world struggles. Highly recommended.

A great read, just as good as book 1. Only downside is that book 3 does not come out until June 2011.

First there was Conan and then came Druss now Kell. A great book and excellent read. This book is so well written, while you are reading it, it is like a movie playing in your mind. I highly recommended this book to all who enjoys books in the realm of Gemmell, Jordan, and Goodkind. I happily welcome Andy Remic to now walk among the for mentioned greats.
Thank you Andy Remic, please give us more!

The first one hit an unknown spot of fantasy-interest in the heart of yours truly. This, the second instalment, just seemed to intensify that feeling. I'm really starting to dig this...
