I liked this book until the last couple of chapters and then it seemed the ending was just thrown together to try and reach a conclusion.

The Way To Babylon book. I felt this in Paul Kearney's other novel, A Different Kingdom, as well. Something about the way that he writes is just blissful and utterly enjoyable. Like eating a huge bowl of ice-cream drizzled with hot fudge and caramel.

Michael Riven-a successful author and former soldier-has fallen off a mountain. Broken in both body and mind, racked with guilt and loss by the death of his wife Jenny, he withdraws into himself in the rural hospital where he painfully recovers. His readers are desperate to know what will happen next in the fantasy world of his stories, but neither writing, nor living, are of interest to him anymore. But there are others seeking the scribe out. Men of Minginish have begun a quest to rescue their blighted homeland, and have come between worlds.

Broken, bereaved and happy to let his fans go without the next book in his bestselling series, fantasy author Michael Riven expects to go home to his isolated cabin and avoid people. But instead strangers seek him out and lead him on a journey away from this world and into Minginish, the imaginary place where his own novels were set, but which is more real than he can conceive - and in danger from legendary beats and unimagined terrors. If they were to leave the city by way of the tunnels, then they would have to descend to its foot. Thirst ravaged him also, though he was not yet desperate enough to consider the water running down the walls around him. It had an unwholesome look, though they had left the sewers behind.

SUMMARY: It is twenty-three years since a Macht army fought its way home from the heart of the Asurian Empire. The man who came to lead that army, Rictus, is now a hard-bitten mercenary captain, middle-aged and tired. He wants nothing more than to lay down his spear and become the farmer that his father was. But fate has different ideas. A soldier of genius, he takes city after city, and reigns over them as king. What is more, he had heard of the legendary leader of the Ten Thousand.

Riven had been a successful fantasy writer, until the accident which killed his wife. Retreating to a remote cottage he doubts whether he will ever write again. Then a stranger arrives who takes him on a journey to the world of his novels, which is being poisoned by his pain.

Lovely story full of life and love, dreams and fantasies, thoughts and chivalry, forever and a day. Loves lost and loves found, tragedy and war, a little bit of everything.
