The definitive account, in his own words, of one of the most popular figures in British theatre. The second and concluding volume of Noël Coward's legendary autobiography includes Future Indefinite and the unfinished Past Unconditional. With his trademark wit, Coward delivers anecdotes about his travels in South America, Hollywood encounters with an array of contemporary stars and directors, and his later theatrical successes, including the Broadway triumph of Design For Living. The showbiz glamour aside, we also encounter a middle-aged man coming to terms with a world in disarray; his confused feelings towards the war and his own part in it exposing a more serious and thoughtful side to a performer and raconteur more usually associated with frivolity. This is a hugely subjective autobiography, penned by one of the most legendary playwright/lyricist/ composer/ entertainer combinations of the last century. For scholars and devotees of Coward's life experiences and his wittly elegant use of vocabulary and phraseology: it is highly valuable. Also of note are Coward's individualistic, personal turn of phrase and the inclusion of persnal habits and mannerisms of daily living: writing, sitting down to tea, fashion, dressing, social graces and vast friendships. To find more of the legendary playwright's private life and what exactly inspired him to write, other objective biographies need to be consulted.

Noel Coward was truly one of our most witty, charming, talented writers and performers. A joy to read!
ME
This man was multi-talented, egocentric, but wonderful. I love the book and him.

Not as irresistible as PRESENT INDICATIVE, but still quite good, is this autobiographical volume dealing with Coward's activities during the WWII years, 1939-1945. Written between 1947 and 1953, and first published in 1954, the book is a witty, often bittersweet, suavely ironical, and often moving, account of Coward's contributions to the war effort as the celebrated playwright and entertainer that he was. It covers all his extensive tours helping to raise the morale of allied troops and the general public in the US, Australia, Africa, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia, his encounters with leaders such as Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt, the crème de la crème of the British military, as well as the European and American intelligentsia. I enjoyed it and can recommend it to all admirers of NC, the man and the artist.
