Her first book, Coming of Age in Samoa (1928; new e. 2001) was a best seller. Mead entered DePauw University in 1919 and transferred to Barnard College a year later.

Mead did her undergraduate work at Barnard College, where she met Franz Boas, who she went on to do her anthropology P. at Columbia University. Mead was born on December 16, 1901, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
