In The Idea of Africa the African philosopher and cultural anthropologist V. Mudimbe has produced a work that is as ambitious in concept as it is impenetrable in style. From the outset it is obvious that this exceedingly dense book is not for the general reader. For anyone who has read through Mudimbe's well-received but difficult book, The Invention of Africa (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1988), the implied promise that this book's five essays and postscript "are stories written for my 'Americanized' children, born in Africa" (p. xii), would seem to come as welcome news. One is pleased to read, for example, that The Idea of Africa is

The Idea of Africa (African Systems of Thought). First of all, this book doesn't quite live up to its title - I expected Mudimbe to write about the invention of the concept of Africa, which he chose as a topic for his book 'The Idea of Africa. It also doesn't really attempt to establish any sort of theory of how African philosophy has developed and exists today.

The book attempts, therefore, a sort of archaeology of African gnosis as a system of knowledge in which major philosophical questions recently have arisen: first, concerning the form, the content, and the style of "Africanizing" knowledge; second, concerning the status of traditional systems of thought and their possible relation to the normative genre of knowledge. Needless to say, the ideas, hypotheses, and interpretations put forth in this book are completely my responsibility.

Y. Mudimbe this is a remarkable book. It will occupy a significant place in the critical literature of African Studies.

As its author Professor Mudimbe says: .this book presents journeys into the multifaceted "idea" of Africa. As approached and circumscribed here, this idea is a product of the West and was conceived and conveyed through conflicting systems of knowledge. North America: Indiana U Press. If you don't mind fuzzy organization, dig out ideas and criticism from "The Idea of Africa".

If you value clarity of writing and unambiguous statements that one can discuss and possibly disprove, drop it.

There is a scholarly review by Kenneth C. Wylie at [...] which I recommend before you embark into reading this book.
