Books are written by an expert in the field and illustrated, comic-book style, by a leading graphic artist. Originally published as Derrida for Beginners (distinct from Derrida for Beginners by Jim Powell & Van Howell, Writers and Readers, 1997).

Since 1968, in coffeehouses around the world, intellectuals have been talking about Jacques Derrida and Deconstruction. Jim Powell has written the most lucid introduction available on this important philosopher, whose abstruse mode of philosophizing remains incomprehensible to even the best-educated minds. Speaking tours.

If you have trouble understanding Derrida, this will help. Just keep in mind that there is no logical consistency to his writings nor any rational underpinning. I studied Derrida in a grad philosophy class many years ago and could not see that there was any substance to his work at all. Although this book tends to be neutral/friendly to Derrida, it unintentionally supports my previous experience.

My personal opinion is that Derrida is intentionally obtuse to hide the lack of substance in his works. Derrida desperately wanted to be seen as an intellectual after a host of academic failures. He succeeded to some extent but as he grew older more and more people slowly started to realize that there was nothing there.

I've loved every For Beginners I've bought, quite a few...they are so smart and I don't see how they can pay the illustrators enough!
Memuro
Not difficult to understand and with great lessons on the history of deconstructionism as well as derrida's personal history. One more word required lol.

this is a great way way to learn about philosophers; it's fun. I read this in combination with Derrida in an Hour and together I feel like they helped me understand the man and his work.
Funky
The idea is great but I don't like the execution. The illustrations are not quite good. Some parts of the content are unnecessarily slow.

I like the idea of explaining a philosophy by images and comments and Derrida was certainly a philosopher for whose concepts the images are adequate means of expression. A helpful introduction to the universe of Derrida,

What a differance this simple book made to my understanding of Mr Derrida.....i's not longer a beginner....come join {m}E
This book is concerned with making accessible the often inaccessible Derrida. Derrida's philosophy will help you develop a healthy sensibility and cynicism for 'knowledge' and 'representation.'
Do not be fooled by the 'for beginners' title; it is not simply an introduction, it is a hands-on intepretation of several his 'major' works. The book has any value for anyone interested in learning about the world in which we live.
