Mann's most blatantly didactic story yet starts out in the Judy Blume mode with references to developing ""tittles,"" then . And Jody turns twelve without trepidation, confident now that she can resist peer pushers without loss of face.

Mann's most blatantly didactic story yet starts out in the Judy Blume mode with references to developing ""tittles,"" then launches into a two-chapter-long biology class lesson on the dangers of pot. Clearly a mouthpiece for the author, Jody's seventh-grade biology teacher is one of the new anti-pot crusaders who preach scientific objectivity while dispensing selective alarms. As well it might, the lecture terrifies Jody, so that she doesn't smoke the ""special birthday present"" offered by her older sister Linda, a problem pothead.

This book was such a great coming of age read. Almost every girl I was in school with, in 4th or 5th grade, checked it out of the school library. We literally waited and took turns. It was a book I could not put down.

I am 41 years old and still remember loving this book! My Mom bought it for me when I was a young teenager and I could not put it down. Even though I did not come from a divorced home nor did I have an older sister who smoked pot - I could relate to so many of the issues in this book. It was one of my all time favorites! I have a daughter of my own now and will most definitely share this one with her when she is old enough to understand the issues. I'm glad to see it is still available even though it is out of print.

This book is an excellent coming of age book which tackles such real concerns as menstruation, peer pressure, and drug use. Like the other reviewer, I read it when I was an adolescent and still have an old copy. I am surprised to find it on Amazon as it has been out of print for many years. I highly recommend this book.
