A Grand Design examines the history of one of the world's great museums, the formation of its collections and the way these have been constantly re-interpreted through its displays. Following its foundation in the wake of the 1851 Great Exhibition, the Museum was concerned especially with "modern manufactures" in an attempt to raise standards of design among British manufacturers. A Grand Design: The Art of the Victoria and Albert Museum features 200 items from ancient to modern in color and usually full page. The commentary reveals details to enhance the experience. The first part of the book is mostly B&W photos from the past and some drawings.

Design and the Decorative Arts: Britain 1500-1900 covers a broader spectrum owned by the V&A but only those items designed and produced in Britain. Additionally, historical houses are included. The book is broken down into eras and categories. I learned a lot from the commentary about why the British Decorative Arts differ from their European cousins.

When I toured the Victoria and Albert Museum in London I was disappointed that the available books were limited to specific genres. These two books have given me at least some coverage of this vast museum.

I also own Judith Miller's Decorative Arts which is spectacularly visual and covers just about everything found in aristocratic homes and museums. It does not include architecture, clothing, or paintings. It provides multiple examples of specific styles from many countries. While the text gives a brief description, it is the photos of individual pieces that trumps every other book I have seen with the exception of those devoted to a single manufacturer.

What do you do with the accumulated exhibits of one of the greatest Exhibitions of manufacturing of the world when the exhibition is finished? You create the Victoria and Albert Museum. Affectionately known throughout London (and the world too) as the V and A, the doughty Victorians with their enlightened instincts embarked on the creation of a museum of manufactures that became a model to follow around the world, but more particularly in the United States.

The Henry Abrams Publishing Group of New York has excelled itself here, in this beautifully stitched and bound, hard cover book called A Grand Design: The Art of the Victoria and Albert Museum. It measures 9.5" by 12" and weighs 6 pounds so it is not a book for the feint hearted occasional train reader. It is clearly pitched at museum curators, museum scholars, museum researchers and specialist Libraries, outlining as it does one of the earliest philosophical rationales for the creation of an educational place, as opposed to a place of historical art works.

Ten outstanding scholars, including two curators of the V&A, were tasked with providing an explanatory essay that becomes a separate chapter on one aspect of the museum. They have provided a most intelligent backdrop for a feast of exhibits found in the book. More than 250 of the museum's works are on display here.

This narrative of this outstanding book is about the buildings of the museum rather than just a display of its interesting works, and they are very impressive indeed, namely, copies of Ghiberti's gates in Florence, Trajan's column in Rome and Michelangelo's David in Florence. There are early black and white photographs of the museum leaders in London showing the historical context of the growth of the museum. It is a true delight to read for anyone interested in one of the most outstanding museums if the world.
