The nursing process: A scientific approach to nursing care.

The nursing process is a modified scientific method. Nursing practise was first described as a four-stage nursing process by Ida Jean Orlando in 1958. It should not be confused with nursing theories or health informatics. The diagnosis phase was added later.

Organisations employing nurses utilise performance feedback as both a risk management mechanism and as a developmental tool to encourage individuals to reach their working potential (Grohar-Murray & DiCroce 1997; Marriner-Tomey, 2000). The concept of feedback utility at the individual level, as explored in this study, is concerned with feedback that will assist the individual nurse to self-assess their level of competence to practice within professional standards and be encouraged to further develop their knowledge and skills.

The nursing process is a scientific method used by nurses to ensure the quality of patient care. The diagnosing phase involves a nurse making an educated judgment about a potential or actual health problem with a patient.

The first step of the nursing process is assessment. Multiple diagnoses are sometimes made for a single patient.
