I would expect the sentence to read "He has been interested in plances since his early childhood", meaning he is still alive and still interested in. .However, I definitely agree with suzi that there's an ambiguity in the case of the planes.
I would expect the sentence to read "He has been interested in plances since his early childhood", meaning he is still alive and still interested in planes. Ssince', for me, means a continuation of the state. I may be wrong about that, however, it is just my feeling.
