WHITE RAT by Gayl Jones is a collection of short stories that run the gamut of bad English speaking Southerners and very articulate, college educated Northerners. The theme that seems to run through all of them is the emotional lives of the characters and the sometimes outright insanity of people. It also covers the challenges that Black Americans face in the United States. WHITE RAT is the story of a black man who can pass for white

Using a story within a story to put forth the main theme. To tell the truth, I don’t totally know what to make of this story. I know it makes me incredibly sad. Jones paints a depressing picture of all-encompassing ignorance when it comes to southern race relations and racial identity.

Using a story within a story to put forth the main theme. The most memorable single element of the story, for me, is the anecdote the narrator relates about a time he was arrested with some black friends. He is put in the jail cell for white men because his skin and features evidently appear to be those of a white man even though he claims African lineage.

White rat by Gayl Jones Short stories. Originally published in 1977, White Rat contains twelve provocative tales that explore the emotional and mental terrain of a diverse cast of characters, from the innocent to the insane. In each, Jones displays her unflinching ability to dive into the most treacherous of psyches and circumstances: the title story examines the identity and relationship conundrums of a black man who can pass for white, earning him the name White Rat as an infant; The Women follows a girl whose mother brings a line of female lovers to live in their home; Jevata.

Only in two stories does the male-female tie show promise: the fairy-tale romance of the reformed drifter who returns to reward his selfless lady friend; a truce in the spatting between a beleaguered, light-skinned ""White Rat"" and his roving ""light yeller woman with chicken scratch hair. Sacrificing intensity but gaining Scope, novelist Jones (Corregidora, Eva's Man) adds some grace notes-mostly dissonant-to the familiar dominant chord: the American black woman, her sexuality skewed by a confused heritage of rape by white men and power over black men.

Books: Accent Put on Negative In Short Stories by Gayl Jones. Gayl Jones, g young novelist of the first rank, demonstrates in these tales that her talent and disposition may not easily iend itself to shorter fiction. Although her prose here is as starkly arrestingand indelible as in her novels, except for the longer stories such as Jeveta and The Women. these tales arc simply doleful vignettes-slices of life so beveled that they seem distorted.

All of the 12 stories which compose White Rat are told in the first person, and each character presents a different voice. As such, there's very little attention paid in these stories to anything but people: the things they do, the things they think and the things they say.
