This is the most detailed book on EVMS out on the market. I have read almost all books on EVMS and this stands alone as the reference point for my work along with my EVM mentors. This book is reference for the Earned Value Professional certification and can provide more help on your PMI cert in the Schedule K.A. than any other EVMS book. How great is this book compared to others on the market? I took a one week external EVMS training course along with being mentored by other EVM experts and barely understood 20% of EVMS. If you want to become an expert or apply EVMS on your projects, I recommend you spend the extra dollars (or expense it) and buy this book and Paul Soloman's "Performance-Based Earned Value" and spend some hours on DAU course if you're a defense or government employee/contractor.

Update 12/29/10: Another great book to understand the ANSI 32 points is "A Practical Guide to Earned Value Project Management and A Practical Guide to Earned Value Project Management, Second Edition (Practical Guides), Dynamic Project Scheduling, and Integrated Cost-Schedule Risk Analysis.

A possible rip off and a disgusting waste of paper. Look - the book has value for sure - but it should be distributed electronically. If you buy this in the paper form (the only type available at the time) you will be sent something set out in some 1980's type face (12 point) with page after page of screen shots from what looks like a powerpoint presentation printed on about 3lb of GLOSSY paper. Wake up guys - if you make it in electronic form, we'd be happy to buy it in that form. GO GREEN. The content is acceptable for a book forced on me by a lecturer's choice but... NOT HAPPY GARY!

If you truly want to learn EVMS from an accurate source, then read this book. I am reviewing books for possible inclusion into an existing EVMS course. Of all previous EVMS books I have reviewed, this one is the most accurate and comprehensive source. Where other books have failed in their accurate treatment of this subject, this book excels. The 36 chapters of this book cover a broad range of project topics, all of which are of interest to those seeking knowledge related to EVMS. Topics include the expected introduction to Earned Value, but also include scheduling, risk, estimating and subcontracts. For example, there is no other EVMS book which treats the topic of scheduling in such a comprehensive manner (13 chapters).

I recognize that just the physical appearance of this book is intimidating. It is just over 11 inches tall, 8 ½ inches wide and almost 2 inches thick. This is an encyclopedia sized volume that will likely scare off some readers. However, behind each chapter are one or more case studies. This means that many of the actual pages are case studies and not content in terms of reading. Another feature of this book is that at the end of each chapter there are review questions. Answers to all chapter review questions are included in a Solutions appendix. The 36 chapters are divided into 5 sections. The first four sections conclude with a comprehensive section quiz. All of which aid the learning experience. One last comment regarding the size or volume of this book. It is a large book and treats this topic in a comprehensive fashion. This is what it takes to fully explain this topic to anyone seriously interested in becoming a practitioner of the topic. Unfortunately, the other books I have reviewed on Amazon which are smaller in size all fail in terms of accuracy.

I do have critical comments which I regard as minor and should not be viewed as a reason to skip this book. It is not always clear that each of the chapter review questions relate to the material just learned. For example question 20-4 on page 400 asks a question related to parametric estimating, but this topic is actually discussed in detail in the following chapter. It would be a benefit if the solutions section also contained the page where the answers can be found. Another area which could be improved upon occurs on page 567. There is a citation on the top of the page citing DI-MGMT-81466. Because this book was published in 2011, the updated document (DI-MGMT-81466A) was available. However the graphic on the previous page (566) shows the CPR form from the updated DI-MGMT-81466A. There are several more like observations and comments, but to conserve space they will not be listed.

Conclusion, this is an excellent book and if you want to actually gain a working knowledge of this topic, then reading this book is a must and don't let its physical size intimidate your pursuit of this topic.

Not only that,but in addition to being trainers and consultants, we are also in the property development business and Humphrey's is the ONLY project management reference which sits on my desk as the FIRST reference I look at whenever we have a project management problem.

The graphics are outstanding and not only is the step by step process proven to work but with case studies and end of chapter and end of section exams, it makes a PERFECT textbook, especially for CAPSTONE courses, either at the undergrad or graduate level.

To summarize, I think Humphrey's Project Management Using Earned Value is the single best desk reference and textbook ever published on APPLIED project management If you don't own one yet, your library will not be complete without it.

Indeed, this is a very comprehensive book with 745 pages. The first 477 pages are general project management content. Page 477 to 625 explains Earned Value Management (148 pages). The rest is implementing project management processes and the appendix with formulas, abbreviations, Glossary and Index.
This is a good book, but there are better general project management books. If you want to study Earned Value Management, this book contains practical and relevant knowledge, but there are similar, well written books which are eight times cheaper with the same EVM content.
