Vocational education is a large part of the high school curriculum, yet we have little understanding of what drives vocational enrollment or whether these courses help or harm early careers. Second, we find higher earnings among students taking more upper-level vocational courses – a nearly 2% wage premium for each additional year, yet we find no gain from introductory vocational courses.
Recently, some career counselors have developed ways of using the CCI and the MCS in group settings. The article concludes with a call for career practitioners to continue to think creatively in using the CCI with clients. These 3 ways include use of written exercises, career collages, and career portfolios.
Career exploration is the step in the career planning process during which you discover about occupations. Use these resources to find yours. You will want to learn what working in the field is really like before you actually work in it. The best way to do this is to talk to people who do. Figure out who, in your professional network, knows people who work in the field or fields in which you are interested, or ask around to see if any of them have contacts who do. Set up informational interviews with anyone who has experience working in the careers you are considering.
