A Prayer for President Obama. As Barack Obama prepares to take the oath of office and become the 44th President of the United States, Christians should be thinking about how to pray for the new President. I offer this prayer as a place to start, as we observe the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States together.

Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray....

--Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln's 1865 inaugural address was as much about God and prayer as it was the circumstances of a nation in civil war. The president's words reflect a country that believed in prayer. Have we as a people shed our passion for praying? Are we now less prone in this 21st century to seek God for the benefit of others and ourselves? Would we ignore the call to pray for the President of the United States of America? Charles Garriott's Obama Prayer is a reminder that little has changed when it comes to our nation's prayer posture. It has been said that within a given week over 80% of our nation will humble themselves before God. This well-crafted, and insightful book provides timely encouragement and insights in how to effectually pray for our president, his family, work, and soul.

Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, is under enormous pressure because of the complexity of his responsibilities. This book provides a good guide, based on the words of Scripture, to know how to pray for our president. The book is easy to read and easy to use.

Our leaders whether Democrat or Republican need our prayers. This is especially true for the leader of our country. This book gives non partisan spiritual undergirding for our president to make wise and just decisions for our nation.

Obama Prayer: Prayers for the 44th President
By: Charles M. Garriott

As a very conservative Republican myself, I have been humbled and convicted about my lack of praying for our President. I know that I should pray for him regardless of how I feel about his views and decisions. This book, Obama Prayer, has been just what I needed to help me focus on praying for our President. I appreciate so much the work that Garriott put into bringing scripture and prayers together to write this helpful prayer guide. There is a prayer at the end of every chapter that follows along with the theme of that chapter. As the book directs to even pray for the President's friendships, I am reminded that he is a real person just like you and I. I highly recommend individuals and church groups to purchase this book to use as a prayer guide for President Obama and our nations future presidents.

Author Charles M. Garriott wrote: "This prayer book is a call for every thoughtful Christian in our land to respond to this administration as our Lord has intended. Christians may not get their political way. But they are expected to represent the Gospel in every sphere of life. Thoughtful, intelligent and persistent prayer for our leader is part of what it means for us to be salt and light in a needy world."(pg.13)

Obama Prayer by Charles M. Garriott covers twelve ways in which we can pray specifically for President Obama. He addresses prayer, reverence, direction, wisdom, words, favor, family, truth, protection, justice, mercy, and friends in the twelve chapters. The prologue talks about the purpose of prayer and how we need to have a proper view and attitude toward prayer itself before we can presume to pray for someone or something in particular.

Garriott consistently points back to what the scriptures say about God and leadership instead of trying to find positive and or negative aspects of Obama's campaign and job as President. God is constant and the scriptures consistent even when we are unsure of man. God is in control regardless of who holds the office of president.

This is not the prayer book I was expecting. I was impressed with Garriott's presentation and while this book was written specifically with President Obama in mind, the overall concepts can be applied to others in leadership. If you can look past the specific references to Obama to the bigger picture of prayer in general, one could even use this as a guidebook for personal prayer time.

I received this book free from the publisher to read and give an honest review.

I confess that I am not always one to remember to pray for our country's leaders. I'm not proud of this. A lot of the time, it's because I have no idea how to pray for them.

What began as an evening of prayer among Charles Garriott a few of his close friends resulted in his book, OBAMA PRAYER. Garriott, who is a minister in Washington, D.C., offers a guide for praying for the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book and was somewhat afraid that it would be more of a book on politics than prayer. But I was wrong.

Garriott beckons his readers to pray for specific aspects of our President's life and work: direction, wisdom, words, favor, family, truth, protection, justice, mercy, and friends.

"The call to pray for President Barack Obama and his administration," says Garriott, "is first of all a call to dependency on God. It is a call to respond to the work of grace within our lives. It is a reminder that in the political realm neither we nor the President are ultimately in charge. We pray, 'Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.'"

Through reading this book, I was humbled by the fact that I so often neglect to pray for our leaders. It's much easier to simply criticize them, right? But while we are not told to blindly agree with or never challenge those in authority over us, we are to respect them and pray for them.

OBAMA PRAYER is a wonderful guide both for individuals and groups who are in prayer for the President. And though the title makes the content sound very specific, I believe that this is a useful tool in praying for any of our leaders, since the same principles apply to all of them. And I truly appreciate Charles Garriott for taking the time to write it.

I also appreciate his reminder to us: "Our hope is never in government, but in God."
