A few years ago, I was going on a work trip. So I went to the book store to buy a few books. There was a BOGO sale going on, and I could not find a second book that interested me, so I grabbed this one. It turned out to be my favorite book of all time. I lent it to someone and never got it back, so I bought the Kindle version.
Rose Miller is the matriarch of the Miller family. If you ask her sister-in-law, Adele, she would disagree and appoint herself as matriarch. Adele never married, while Rose married Hugh. Hugh and Rose are going to be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary with a huge party, which Rose is not too enthused about. She would rather it be family only, but she goes along with her husband's plans. Rose can always be counted on to dispense wise advice, and to be a friend to all.
Stella is the oldest daughter. She is a single mom to Amelia, an attorney, and takes after her mother in her kindness and compassion. She meets and falls in love with Nick, who is a recently divorced father of 2.
Tara is the middle daughter, and she is a bit of a non-conformist. She married Finn after a whirlwind romance, and is a writer for a hugely popular soap opera.
Holly is the shy youngest daughter. She lives in a flat with 2 wacky neighbors across from her, Joan and Kenny. While these 2 are secondary characters, they add a lot of flair and humor and really add to the book in a fun and positive way. Holly has never been close to Rose, and Holly, Joan, and Kenny somewhat form their own version of family.
To outsiders, it appears the Miller family have it all. But that is the public face. In private, Rose and Hugh have issues brewing in their marriage. Adele is a bit dominearing and tactless (although she made me laugh, we all have that ONE relative). Stella is concerned as Nick is recently divorced and his daughter definitely does not approve of him dating. Tara is beginning to realize that Finn has some issues. His mother is extremely possessive and hates Tara, and Finn drinks a lot. And Holly would love to find a special man, but is too shy to do anything about it.
After the Miller family is faced with a crisis, it's interesting to see other sides of each woman's personality come out. I do not want to give away any plot, but we see growth and change in all. I cannot recommend this book enough, I could not put it down.

Upon receiving this book, I recognized about 500 pages and immediately put it off, assuming I had no time to read such a long book. When I finally found the time in my schedule, I was pleasantly surprised. The book was very good and touching, sharing the stories of three Irish women who are facing hidden trials and tribulations for fear of damaging their reputation. When one of them finally makes a stand, the others' lives begin to unravel even faster leaving them all scrambling for the resolutions to their problems. The only problem I had with this book was Kelly's overuse of certain phrases ("solar plexus", "nineteen to the dozen", etc) which began to sound cliche page after page. However, the book is something I would definitely recommend to anyone wishing to look into four seemingly perfect lives to see everyone has imperfections.

I read this book during a very trying time in my life (loss of daughter in law) and at times this was difficult for me to read but in the end I felt that it was very reassuring to know that other people experience difficulties in their life and are able to carry on.
