The early history of Singapore refers to its pre-colonial era before 1819, when the British East India Company was led by Sir Stamford Raffles established a trading settlement on the island and set in motion the history of Singapore. Prior to 1819, the island was known by several names; an early reference may be in the 2nd century work by Ptolemy which identified a coastal port at the southernmost tip of the Malayan peninsula, called Sabana. It is extremely rare to find a book about folk magic that relies on its actual history rather than romanticized notions and historical revisionism. The Cunning Man's Handbook is, hands down, the best work on Cunning Craft that I've ever read.

In this fully updated, second edition of Crossroads, Jim Baker adds two new chapters that bring Malaysia and Singapore into the middle of the first decade of the 21st century. The original text (which traces the complex currents of history and politics of Malaysia and Singapore neighbours with a common past) is also revised to re-evaluate events in the context of an expanded history.

This is a great introduction about Singapore's history, culture, and mindset. It is a great read for anyone traveling or wanting to learn how they have progressed so far in a short amount of time. It also points out some of the challenges they have ahead.

Book is pretty good, especially early on with the descriptions of the different colonial periods and how they shaped Malaysia. The 20th and 21st century history sections were less interesting and focused almost exclusively on political history, whereas a broader view that also considered significant individuals (in business, etc.) and their stories might have been more engaging.

Great book. I really liked the early history and the modern history. The 70s and 80s read like a political party and politician soup at times.

We visited Singapore last year and wanted to learn more about the history of this part of the world. This book was well written and covered the history from it's first inhabitants to recent times. An easy read that was hard to put down.
An excellent historical account giving the reader a feeling for the dynamical forces driving the social and political development. Kenneth/Sweden
