A Sort of Samurai (Otani). Superintendent Tatsuo Otani Ninth Netsuke by James Melville. Manila murder victim, Cleo Ventura is found in the Sweet Harmony Room of the Fantasia hotel a notorious catering spot for prostitutes to take their clients.

A Sort of Samurai (Otani). Although Superintendent Otani isn’t on the case, he still wants to check out the scene of the murder.

A Sort of Samurai book. The best part is the character development of the three main detectives: Superintendent Tesuo Otani, a quiet, reflective and intuitive man; Ninja, a thug-like detective, comfortable in the underworld and ready to break the rules, and Kimura a ladies man, comfortable with foreign women. All three are complex and likable, and it is refreshing to have realistic human’s to relate I liked this book, it is by a white guy, but he seems to have true respect and deep understanding of Japanese character.

When a pretty young main is bludgeoned to death in the Old Library of Buckingham Palace just a week before George V's Silver Jubilee, no one is free from suspicion except, perhaps, the King himself. T.E.B. Clarke, the noted British screenwriter, has crafted a masterful mystery that is both a gem of police procedure and a fascinating candid look at the problems of running a palace. Stewards, footmen, chambermaids and the highest peers of the realm all swell the intricate and amusing scene. But behind the regal trappings wriggle the worms of blackmail, sex and murder.

Superintendent Otani stumbles across a body near the docks of Kobe in this the second of 13 novels by writer James Melville about Superintendent Otani of the Hyogo Prefectural Police. A massive earthquake shakes Kobe on Boys' Day with carp streamers tilted off rooftops with boys resident, and deaths from heart attack and strokes due to stress are precipitated. Otani and wife Hanae's only child Akiko marries her college firebrand agitator boy friend Shimizu now trade company executive, and they have a baby boy Kazuo. When the body of a gaijin (foreigner) is discovered. Otani who does not speak German or English, seeks the counsel of his son-in-law as Otani is uncomfortable among foreigners.

Otani tries to sidestep Sakamoto a rigid, by the rules only subordinate by taking over the case himself from his lieutenants Ninja Noguchi and foppish Kimura, with the help of Tomita his faithful driver.

Cruelty and sexual perversions conflict with affection loyalty and duty and Otani must decide how to deal with an old Samurai family, bunraku master (puppeteer) son of geisha, a mysterious gaijin beauty with hidden tensions, and murder.

Melville's writing is concise and atmospheric bringing to the imagination Kobe in 1981. Otani reveals his bias and prejudice as one of the pre-WWII era who lived through the Occupation and emerges almost unscathed into modern Japan. The pull of ancient cultural tradition of Samurai vs the duty of modern police tear at Otani.

Melville uses contemporary CBT cognitive behavioral therapy, distraction from the emotional with use of frontal lobe executive decision making, solving math problems much like [ASIN:B00F55HNBY The Internship] winning app. To prevent one from doing the embarrassing and humiliating, remember to try to do the square root of an odd number in your head before you click "send." Melville's technique is to have Hanae use patience to wait and listen until Otani spills out what she would otherwise pursue with questioning.

5 star taut writing, engaging and thoughtful. PS The first book of the 13 novel series is called the Wages of Zen.
