There is a lot of ruin in a nation, wrote Adam Smith. His point was that it takes a long time for nations to fall, even when they’re dead on their feet. And he was certainly right. America took its fatal blow in 1913, one hundred years ago; it just hasn’t hit the ground yet. This is a slow process, but it’s actually fast compared to the Romans. It took them several centuries to collapse. The confusing thing about our current situation is that America – and by that I mean the noble America that so many of us grew up believing was real – has long been poisoned. Its liver, kidneys, and spleen.

Books'America's Constitution': A Liberal Originalist. Continue reading the main story. This contrasts sharply with, say, the more cynical portrait in Charles Beard's influential 1913 book "An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution," which contended that the framers' primary purpose had been to create a charter that protected their wealth. At the same time, Amar's Constitution is, until the addition of the 13th Amendment after the Civil War, more thoroughly defined (and corrupted) by its concessions to slave states than many contemporary historians would probably acknowledge.

This book is a thrill ride for anybody interested in European history. To be exact the year 1913. Florian Illies skillfully pulls together month by month the larger and smaller literary, cultural, medical, poetic, political, musical, artistic and gossipy events of this pivotal year, and with a sharp tongue, sometimes almost a little too sharp, weaves a story as it can only be woven in hindsight, with the distance and of our elevated viewpoint.
I enjoyed reading about so many influential people's lives of this year, parallel to each other, cross references being made which were impossible to see back then. It was refreshing and sometimes I felt in his writing a little lacking of some respect, but even this I could forgive the author. It amuses!
Especially since we know how it all ended.
