In 1968, Harrison was appointed a professor of history at the same college and held it for nineteen years. Then in 1979, Wright became a provost at that college, where he worked until 1984. In 1982, he was an acting president at Swarthmore College. Also he served as Isaac H. Clothier professor of history and international relations at Swarthmore College from 1987 to 1993. Since 1993 Harrison has been a Clothier professor and provost emeritus at the same college.
