We provide a comprehensive historical overview of the changes in European migration since the 1950s. We take as our starting point the bilateral labour migration agreements signed by several European countries in the 1950s and 1960s.

We provide a comprehensive historical overview of the changes in European migration since the 1950s. Main phases in immigration, its backgrounds, and its determinants across the continent are described making use of secondary literature and data. Three main periods can be distinguished from this point onwards.
