To a fan or student of Asian Art the name Shih Tao is familiar. Excerpts from his text 'Enlightening Remarks on Painting'that he wrote in the 17th century/Ching Dynasty are often republished. Shih Tao masterfully wove many strands in his philosophy of art. You will find in this text the currents of Taoism and Buddhism that flowed from his meditative and artistic practice. This book by Richard Strassberg is a full translation of Shih Tao's text. There are a few illustrations of Shih Tao's work in this book and the combination of Shih Tao's sublime advice on painting coupled with his paintings put the lucky reader into a very unique and rich place. This book, for me, was one of the great finds of recent years and I go back to it again and again for inspiration.
