Because their fate was not initially known, the 2nd became known as the "Lost Battalion". The author, a native Texan, joined Battery F, 131st Field Artillery, Second Battalion, 36th Division in January 1941 and was shipped to the south pacific theater. Very Good red boards with gilt title on front cover and spine. Fair dust jacket-intact but soiled and with several small tears and chips. The Second Battalion was the first to fight the Japanese Army on the Island of Java, but were overwhelmed by sheer numbers and became among the first American POW's. Because their fate was not initially known, the 2nd became known as the "Lost Battalion".

The Lost Battalion" refers to the 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry (36th Infantry Division, originally Texas National Guard), which was surrounded by German forces in the Vosges Mountains on 24 October 1944. Against the advice of his senior officers, Maj. General John E. Dahlquist committed the "Texas Battalion" to an engagement. The battalion was cut off by the Germans, and attempts by the 36th Division's other two battalions to extricate it failed.

The 36th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. It was originally raised in 1916 as part of the First Australian Imperial Force during World War I. Throughout World War I the battalion served on the Western Front as part of the 9th Brigade, attached to the 3rd Division.
