Communal child rearing was the method of education that prevailed in the collective communities in Israel (kibbutz; plural: kibbutzim), until about the end of the 1980s. Collective education started on the day of birth and went on until adulthood. At the time it was considered a natural outcome of the principle of equality, which was part and parcel of the kibbutz life.
A kibbutz (Hebrew: קִבּוּץ /. קיבוץ, lit. "gathering, clustering"; regular plural kibbutzim. ִבּוּצִים /. קיבוצים) is a collective community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. The first kibbutz, established in 1909, was Degania. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism.
