Alfred Byrd Graf, globe-trotting botanist, collector and photographer who . Mr. Graf's ''Hortica: Color Cyclopedia of Garden Flora and Exotic Plants Indoors'' has been in print at Roehrs since 1992.

Alfred Byrd Graf, globe-trotting botanist, collector and photographer who compiled some orf world's most elaborate and expensive plant books, dies at age 100 (M. His comprehensive illustrated inventories of the world's flora were expensive, though the cost did not seem to discourage aficionados. They first took notice with the appearance of his ''Exotica: Pictorial Cyclopedia of Indoor Plants'' (Roehrs Publishing, 1958), also known as the ''Exotic Plant Manual. It describes in detail more than 10,000 ornamental plants for indoors and for every climate.

This is the lightweight version of Exotic Plant Manual, (which I highly recommend). It's filled with photos, mostly black and white but very good photos. There is a code on each plant picture which indicates light, watering, soil etc requirements. These books by Graf were written in the 70s but are still very useful. His care recommendations are usually spot on. Most of the plants available now will be found in his books. Sometimes I find a new plant not in his books, but most of them are here, Exotic Plant Manual even more so. Try this book, if you like it I suggest the mid size Exotic Plant Manual which has 4200 illustrations. Of course there's always the big kahuna, Graf's Exotica for those who can't get enough!

Old material.

This is an excellent book especially for those who like to know about a lot of different houseplants. Most of the houseplant books available write about the common houseplants. If you like the unusual houseplant this book probably has it listed. This book has both the common and the unusual plants listed.

There are 1200 plants listed. There is a chart to find the information for each plant. It states if it is a house or greenhouse plant. It has information that tells what each plant needs for temperature, light, soil and watering. It doesn't go into detail about the plants, just a picture and the chart. But when you can't find the information anywhere else it is nice to have something.

This book has been reprinted many times, but I think most of the editions are the same. This book is many years old, but the information is very accurate.

An amazing reference! The best I've found for cacti and succulents!
