The USGS Mineral Resources Program continues a tradition of Federal leadership in the science of mineral resources that extends back before the beginning of the bureau. The need for information on metallic mineral resources helped lead to the creation of the USGS in 1879. In response to the need to assess large areas of Federal lands in the 20th century, Program scientists developed, tested, and refined tools to support managers making land-use decisions on Federal lands.

This report compiles selected results from 13 . Geological Survey (USGS) mineral resource assessment studies conducted in Idaho and Montana into consistent spatial databases that can be used in a geographic information system. The 183 spatial databases represent areas of mineral potential delineated in these studies and include attributes on mineral deposit type, level of mineral potential, certainty, and a reference. The assessments were conducted for five 1° x 2° quadrangles (Butt. ONTINUE READING.

In this work we will address the need for shale geochemical and mineralogical standards by developing a set of 5 shale/mudrock geochemical reference materials (GRMs) representing major lithofacies (calcareous, dolomitic, clay-rich, c) associated with unconventional petroleum resources.

The subject before this sub-committee this morning – America’s Mineral Resources: Creating Mining . America has the good fortune to be a resource-rich nation.

The subject before this sub-committee this morning – America’s Mineral Resources: Creating Mining & Manufacturing Jobs and Securing America – is critical to so many of the pressing policy issues before the Congress today, whether it’s the restoration of American manufacturing prowess, or restoring our economy to sustainable growth, or supporting our high-tech sector and our green-tech transition – and of course . Sound policy can help ensure that our resources will be used to support our economic strength and our national security – and reduce the dangers of resource dependence in our uncertain world.

Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Data System catalogs information about mineral resources around the United States and the world. Using the map tool, users can zoom in to obtain reports and data on past and present mines, mine prospects, and processing plants.
