Before I Met You book. This was my first book by Lisa Jewell but it will certainly not be my last. This woman can write passages which make me want to reach into the pages of the book and see the images for myself, which is so wonderful to experience. If you've read and loved Jojo Moyes (Me Before You, The Girl You Left Behind, et. and like books which bring together the past and present, this is going to be one you won't want to miss.

The book seamlessly goes back and forth between Betty's modern day story and her grandmother's story in the 20s. I really enjoyed both stories and thought that the author did a great job in meshing both parts of the novel together.

Lisa Jewell was born and raised in north London, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. Elizabeth’s mother had met this woman before, about two years ago when she and her boyfriend had only just started dating. She had described her then as ‘colourful’ but ‘mean’. She is the bestselling author of Ralph’s Party, Thirtynothing, One-Hit Wonder, Vince & Joy, A Friend of the Family, 31 Dream Street, The Truth About Melody Browne, After the Party and The Making of Us, all of which have been Sunday Times bestsellers. uk or follow her on twitter jewelluk. Very Old Chap
The story is of two main characters, Arlette and Betty, Arlette's granddaughter, and the time span is from the 1920's to the 1990's, it goes back and forth flawlessly. Betty is looking for Clara, who is mentioned in Arlette's will. So begins the love story of her grandmother and a man of color, of her friendships , going to clubs and you can imagine the dress and the sounds of the twenties. Betty leaves the island of Guernsey and moves to Soho and lives quite differently than Arlette, working at Wendy's, meeting a rock star and working as a nanny. Always she is looking for the mysterious Clara and that is an adventure that is heart warming. This book was enjoyable and I loved the characters.

Enjoyed the parts of the book about Betty searching for Arlette's heir and learning about Arlette's history, particularly her relationship with Godfrey in 1920s London. But, the part about Dom Jones, a mega pop star, falling for Betty after meeting her twice and then proposing they live together forever on a farm, and Betty working for his ex-wife as a nanny. Get real. The story would have been much more interesting if the author had developed the relationship between John and Betty. And language, language, language. Inexcusable. Can't anyone write a decent book today without using the f word.

This book is a steal! This book was well written and kept me on my toes from beginning to end. I don't know if i've actually ever read a book that had so many different voices but articulated it so well. The characters in the book are relatable, the story hits close to the heart in many instances and overall I really enjoyed a book with such strong women as main characters. GREAT book. Take the plunge - give it a read.

The story takes a little while to get going but it sucked me in. Interesting story with some twists, alternating between two eras. Betty is searching for the person her grandmother wanted to inherit some money. There is a satisfying ending and a resolution to all the twists and turns. It took me a while to finish because my Kindle died and I had to buy a new one.

Such a great story with well developed characters. It's intelligent mind candy. I am not given to long wordy reviews; this book engaged me, entertained me and I was sad to see it end. It was very well written and I appreciated the smooth transition back and forth between the two time frames and characters. It's not a formulaic storyline; I didn't know what was coming or guess how it would end. All in all, a delightful read.

I adored this book.the authors writing style is amazing. So creative and detailed. The story had mystery and romance and drama. It was just wonderful. You won't be disappointed.
This is a great story for anyone who is interested in Great Britain during the forties. There are many time shifts that keep the reader on their toes. The descriptions of two to three generations and how their lives intersected kept my attention.
