The Great Adventure: Male Desire and the Coming of World War I. Michael C. Adams.

The Great Adventure explores the intellectual trends that made war seem a natural and high expression of social values. This is not a book about the specific causes of World War I, but a study of the mood in which it could take place. What the book uncovers is a complex of deeply ingrained attitudes about manhood, sex, power, maturity, boredom, and war that defined a culture in which war came to be seen as a positive option

He is the author of Living Hell: The Dark Side of the Civil War and The Great Adventure: Male Desire and the Coming of World War I.

The Great Adventure : Male Desire and the Coming of World War I by Michael C. This is a great book-pack full of information and insight-but not the type of book to be read easily for pure entertainment. His emphasis takes the reader past the historical facts of the war to the literary representation of it. He compares writing styles before and after the war, and his conclusions are breath taking.

Nelson's victory that autumnal afternoon established a supremacy at sea which lasted a century and gave most of the world's great nations a period of relative calm known as the Pax Britannica. Something else remained constant as well: through all those years British seamen exuded a confidence higher than arrogance, an assurance that was bred and passed along by the seventeen thousand men who served at Trafalgar in Nelson's oak-hulled leviathans. Trafalgar was fought because a mighty Continental state ruled by a conquerer, Napoleon Bonaparte, threatened the security and interests of England.
