Jackson announces at the outset that he will concentrate on ""the lovable qualities"" of Caruso and leave his music for others. The only ""historical"" contribution Jackson makes is to document Caruso's eleven-year affair with Ada Giachetti which ultimately led to his conviction for indecency - a turgid, deliberately titillating description of the great singer's tragedy which scandalmongers in the worst inconsequential way. Only for the undiscriminating who prefer gossip and envy greatness.
