Been looking for this to replace one I had loaned out years ago. Love this book.

The author starts with two of the letters from Jonathan to his mother Rachel, widow of Simeon ben Erza, `in the streets of the Weavers, Cyrene, in the land of Cyrenaica, in the months of January and February, A.D. 27'.

Jonathan makes it very clear in the letter that he did not want to leave his native country for the land of his forefathers, but he did it strictly to comply with his mother's desires, and that he feels very homesick. He questions his mother as to why she wanted him to study in Jerusalem, because there were equally learned scholars in Alexandria who were `well-versed in all the lore and laws and traditions of our people'. He also inquires if the mother was thinking of finding a wife for him among the Judeans, and that he desires no such marriage. The second letter is about Jonathan being greeted in his uncle Joseph of Arimathea's home.

The four parts of the book and the epilogue are fascinating as they make hints on the culture and tradition of the society, Jonathan's meeting of figures like Jairus, Nicodemus, and Nathanael. Jonathan could have inherited the uncle's wealth and married a lady of upper class, but he had other plans....

I have read and reread this book...it is probably my favorite book. It is fiction set in the time of Jesus and lets the reader experience knowing Him as He walked this earth as you see the fictional characters interact with Him....reverantly written and richly in historical details....I love this book!!!

I just finished this book and was so affected by the fleshing out of all the familiar people in the Biblical account of Jesus, the Messiah's unveiling to the Jewish world. You follow Jonathan, the nephew of Joseph of Arimathea, as he is introduced to Jesus and Jonathan's reaction as his world becomes familiar with the Messiah. This book is a page-turner and I will be recommending it to my friends!

Come meet the disciples, Bar Abbas, Benjamin, Jairus and all those who are intertwined in the Gospel Story of Jesus, The Messiah.
