Many guitar books skim over the subject, but this one provides an excellent treatment. The Neoclassical Speed Strategies for Guitar is another book we’d recommend more for the seasoned player.

Many guitar books skim over the subject, but this one provides an excellent treatment. And it really isn’t as hard as it sounds. This one provides an excellent introduction into fingerpicking with helpful illustrations of exactly how to position yourself for the quickest and most efficient playing. It includes lots of helpful examples and exercises to make it easier to master. You can download audio and video files if you need additional instruction on doing it.

To put it in guitar terms, a half step is equivalent to a one-fret movement. And here’s the box shape for the A minor: The best part about these boxes is that you can shift them around to yield different major or minor scales. A whole step, on the other hand, is akin to moving up (or down) the fretboard by two frets. And when you play a string of notes in certain intervals, you get a scale. For instance, moving the C major scale box shape up a whole step, to the D, gives you the D major scale. Try taking the C major scale box shape to the G note on the E string, starting on the third fret. Now that the pattern begins on a G, you’ll get a G major scale.

This book is not for the beginner - you need to have at least a year under your belt or else you will be frustrated. The author must have made this his life's work - it is hard to imagine the amount of time he must have spent on it. The only mistake that the author made was the title of the book. I don't know why "improvising" is in the title. The subtitle is much more accurate - "An Introduction to Blues Guitars Style, Techniques, and Improvisation"

Playing the guitar is a skill that youll have for the rest of your life. Its a perfect relaxation tool great socially and both fun and easy. I find that most beginning lessons either focus only on reading notes which would bore me to death or only on basic folk strumming and chords and I like all styles of music.
