I wanted to learn more about the snakes of Southern Africa since I keep a pet brown house snake. I was able to learn more about the species I keep and how it lives in the wild as well as its many related species. I was also able to learn more about other snakes that prey on brown house snakes in the wild. I was pleased by the information including scale counts location maps, drawings of the head scales, and the iconographic presentations for each species.. This is a very nice reference and a good addition to the bookshelf of anyone who keeps or is interested in snakes from Southern Africa. The first section gives an overview that may be used as in introduction to snakes in general. It also gives an overview of the habitats in this region that is useful to those of us who are less familiar with that part of the world. I bought it in both Kindle and paperback versions for ready reference. I'm glad I did.

It had more than I was looking for. While the photos of snakes were not all that good (having grown up in India, I realize snakes can be elusive), the book is excellent and provides professional-level information on the snakes of Southern Africa.

Having recently moved to a farm in South Africa this book is very useful as I've already have a few snake visitors. The details on each snake are very thorough. However, in terms of identifying a snake that you don't know, you have to go through all the pages, looking for one that matches.

I mistook this product for a field guide; do not expect one in this text.

Excellent book, very informative.

I failed. I needed this as an interactive app for my tablet,or as a hardcopy not as an e-book. The information is excellent, but trying to identify a snake we saw on holiday required much paging back and forth on the tablet without success! (perhaps I am just new to electronic books and there are ways and means of which I know not!)The hardcopy is brilliant: very informative and the photographs are clear and bright and it is easy to navigate your way around.

By far the best snake identification guide on southern Africa on the market today !

I have got the first version of this book as well, it was good, but this one is really good.

First of all the book has got a normal size, a lot of these guides are small and are therefore handy to pack but difficult to use. This one has not as it is A4 size.

Photos are generally of good quality and of live animals and give you allready good identification keys.
The drawings besides the text shows you in a blink of an eye what the head of the snakes looks like, venomous or not, and if so how venomous, nocturnal/diurnal,ground or tree dwelling and size.

Text is good as well as the distribution mappes.

Conclusion ?!
