He was the music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) and is Conductor Emeritus of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mehta's father was the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra, and Mehta received his early musical education from him. When he was 18, he enrolled in the Vienna state music academy, from which he graduated after three years with a diploma as a conductor.

Martin Bookspan, American Broadcaster, writer, lecturer. Recipient Peabody award, 1948, Letter of Merit American Music Center, 1977, Medal of Honor, National Arts Club, 1984, Special award Concert Artists Guild, 1986. Foreign years he was also announcer for the Live from the Met series on Public Broadcasting Service (which eventually became The Metropolitan Opera Presents). He graduated from Harvard in 1947.

Zubin Mehta received praise early in his career for dynamic interpretations of the large scale symphonic music of Anton Bruckner, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler and Franz Schmidt. He has also made a recording of Indian instrumentalist, Ravi Shankar's Sitar Concerto No. 2, with Shankar and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The making of this production was chronicled in a documentary called "The Turandot Project" which Mehta narrated.
