I watched the movie version of "Man on Fire" twice. I was even more impressed the second time I saw the movie. Then I noticed in the credits that the movie was based on a book. I found "Man on Fire" hard to put down. It is a real page turner and I got hooked by the Creasy character. The book is different from the movie. The book is set in Italy instead of Mexico, but the differences do not diminish either the book or the movie. I did order the paperback book (used) that has Denzel Washington's picture on the cover. I prefer reading paperbacks. I do not own a kindle reader. So far I have read the 2nd and the 3rd books in the Creasy series: "A Perfect Kill" and "The Blue Ring." They too were great reads. According to Wikipedia, there are 5 Creasy novels. The other two are (#4) "Black Horn" and (#5) "Message from Hell." Check out the Wikipedia page on A. J. Quinnell. You get a better view of his work from Wikipedia than from If you enjoy action/adventure books, the Creasy series is great. My other favorite action/adventure authors are Tom Clancy ("Hunt for Red October") and P.T. Deutermann ("Hunting Season").
After much talk about the movie, I decided to check out the book first. I wouldn't mind seeing action heroes like Creasy in the big and small screens more often. He's an American who can speak a myriad of languages (okay, maybe two or three), and is a badass former soldier-turned bodyguard to boot. We go through his journey of change, mainly involving interaction with other characters who are all memorable in their own right. Quinnell's great at painting not only characters, but scenes as well. Because of his skilled use of detail I found this book hard to put down. Down the road it did become apparent that this borders idealization (I found Creasy to be too impeccable at times), and I felt like he could've done more with the ending. But still, overall, this book left a strong impression for me, and it made me want to seek out similar works--those of the romanticized crime drama persuasion.
I read this book years ago and thought to try it again. The story is as gripping and realistic as if it were happening today. I have become a Crease follower and will be revisiting the other novels in the series. A great author doesn't need to write a cliff-hanger to have readers panting for the nest book and Quinnell is a truly great writer.
I read this book in one sitting.
The movie with Denzel Washington was the reason why I bought it. I liked the character portrayed in the movie.
So I looked for the book version. Imagine my surprise when I realized that the story line had been switched 180 degrees.
The books altogether are well written and I am enjoying them.
Creasy was not totally the same character as portrayed on one of my all time fav movies. But, I did appreciate the background info into his earlier life. Gave me a better understanding of his drive and motives. I see now how there could be a sequel to the Man on Fire movie! Did he die...really? Will keep my eyes open for this one...will go on to read the second book in this series!!!
Wow man on fire is great! This book is nothing like the movie but its a great story in its own way. They do have some similarities but this book makes you feel more than the movie ever could in my opinion. I devinitely reccomend this but if you get it make sure you have plenty of time to read because you might not want to put it down.
I loved the movie with Denzel Washington and thought I would take a chance on the original story. It starts out a little slow but the development of the characters is pretty good. Way different than the movie although I can see the parallels. Once it gets started, look out for Creasy!
The story itself was nothing I haven't seen or read in many variations over the years. The characters were pretty two dimensional, except for Creasy, no one else had anything to offer me. The movie version, which is only relatively close to the novel, was far more interesting and worthy of my time.
