Following A Deeper Sleep, her most successful Kate Shugak novel to date, the Edgar Award winner and New York Times bestselling thriller writer Dana Stabenow delivers a nail-biting, all-too-real novel of international suspense.A terrorist with a most personal grudge, an FBI analyst challenged to be three steps ahead of the intelligence, a Coast Guard captain assigned to keep watch on that very American of symbols from the water, an astronaut who takes her job very seriously—the paths of all of these characters converge on one clear morning in Florida. NASA is preparing to launch the space shuttle, this time with a high-paying visitor on board as a guest, and the FBI and the Coast Guard are doing everything they can to help the launch go off without a hitch. But one Pakistani man with a bottomless personal grudge and the commitment of many zealous men behind him is determined to strike back at the most visible target he can find.Once again Dana Stabenow, who researched this gripping scenario by spending weeks living on board a Coast Guard cutter as it conducted its mission in the eastern Pacific, delivers an action-driven thriller with an ingenious, frightening, straight-from-the-headlines plot, certain to be her next bestseller.

I have read all of the books in Dana Stabenow's The Kate Shugac Series and The Liam Campbell Series both of which are set in Alaska and deal with the main characters and the various adventures that circle around them. I was not prepared for a totally different type of title involving a terrorist, an FBI analyst, a Coast Guard captain and a Pakistani man in an effort to launch, or defeat the launch, of a space shuttle from being successful. It was initially very interesting, but I found it to be a bit too convoluted to hold my interest and I gave up on it. I'm sure there are readers who will thoroughly enjoy it, if they enjoy a realistic and complex tale of international intrigue.

Although not set in Alaska, this novel of international terrorism and intrigue kept my attention and made it very hard to get enough sleep. Dana Stabenow is very thorough in her research about the Coast Guard, NASA's astronaut program and terrorism. She comes up with a plausible plot line, a little romance, a lot of action and interesting characters. I am unsure of the validity of the means of the act of terrorism as I am not an expert on weaponry, but even if inauthentic, it is interesting. I can see a bit of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt in the hero and the action, but since I like Clive Cussler, that was not a distraction.

I'm just sorry Stabenow can't write as fast as I can read, because her characters feel like real people ... people I'd like to know. At this point, I bet she even writes a good grocery list.

If you like this one, I recommend you start at the beginning and read each of her series in order. Although each can be read individually, the history and personalities of her primary characters build throughout the series.

I've read all Dana Stabenow's books and particularly liked her last one, BLINDFOLD GAME. She researched the newest, PREPARED FOR RAGE, by living aboard a Coast Guard cutter for several weeks. The result is one of the most convincing portrayals of seaborne policing that I've ever read. I wish I could be as enthusiastic about her characters. The two "good guy" protagonists lack the spark that creates understanding and empathy in a reader. The bad guy is more fully described, but I had difficulty buying into his basic motivation: that after his bigoted countrymen caused the death of his sister because he was too Americanized, he began to hate America instead of the bigotry of his homeland. Still, PREPARED FOR RAGE is what the Brits call "a ripping yarn" -- good entertainment for readers who like plot-driven suspense.

A long time fan of the author's stories of Alaska, this was a significant shift of characters and plot. The story built in tension and character development.

Sharply written. Well researched, hallmark of Dana Stabenow's writing style. Some might say, "ripped from today's headlines," Prepared for Rage keeps you turning the pages. Coastie stories are fun. Dana goes inside the Coast Guard and shows us how this branch of our military operates.

always a good read

Stabenow has moved beyond the Alaskan bush in this latest story. At first, I missed Kate Shumak, but this was a compelling thriller, even if the characters aren't as fully developed.
Anything Stabenow writes is great.
