Elizabeth’s famous Sonnets from the Portuguese, based on their love affair, is included in its entirety. The poems are augmented with a generous selection of the marvelous letters the Brownings wrote to each other.
However, Robert convinced her of their importance and she published them in her book Poems in 1850. These sonnets were an instant success and were Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s most commercially successful work. To help protect her privacy, Elizabeth called them The Sonnets from the Portuguese to create the impression that she had just translated them from Portuguese rather than written them herself. They were especially ground-breaking due to their female narrator; previously the women in this type of poem had been passive and remote objects of admiration without voice or opinion.

Book is nice dark green hard cover with beautiful gold embossed head of Browning on cover and title in gold on spine. Cover is in very nice shape with only very minimal rubbing/ bumping on corners, end of upper spine does have small area of chipping, and some minor rubbing on bottom of spine. Published by MacMillan Co. 1898.
