Richard North Patterson’s masterful portrayals of law and politics at the apex of power have made him one of our most important writers of popular fiction. Combining a compelling narrative, exhaustive research, and a sophisticated grasp of contemporary society, his bestselling novels bring explosive social problems to vivid life through characters who are richly imagined and intensely real. Now in Balance of Power Patterson confronts one of America’s most inflammatory issues–the terrible toll of gun violence.President Kerry Kilcannon and his fiancée, television journalist Lara Costello, have at last decided to marry. But their wedding is followed by a massacre of innocents in a lethal burst of gunfire, challenging their marriage and his presidency in ways so shattering and indelibly personal that Kilcannon vows to eradicate gun violence and crush the most powerful lobby in Washington–the Sons of the Second Amendment (SSA).Allied with the President’s most determined rival, the resourceful and relentless Senate Majority Leader Frank Fasano, the SSA declares all-out war on Kerry Kilcannon, deploying its arsenal of money, intimidation, and secret dealings to eviscerate Kilcannon’s crusade–and, it hopes, destroy his presidency. This ignites a high-stakes game of politics and legal maneuvering in the Senate, the courtroom, and across the country, which the charismatic but untested young President is determined to win at any cost. But in the incendiary clash over gun violence and gun rights, the cost to both Kilcannons may be even higher than he imagined. And others in the crossfire may also pay the price: the idealistic lawyer who has taken on the gun industry; the embattled CEO of America’s leading gun maker; the war-hero senator caught between conflicting ambitions; the female senator whose career is at risk; and the grief-stricken young woman fighting to emerge from the shadow of her sister, the First Lady. The insidious ways money corrodes democracy and corrupts elected officials . . . the visceral debate between gun-rights and gun-control advocates . . . the bitter legal conflict between gun companies and the victims of gun violence . . . a ratings-driven media that both manipulates and is manipulated–Richard North Patterson weaves these engrossing themes into an epic novel that moves us with its force, passion, and authority.

I read this on my Kindle by Amazon and it was one of the best books that I have read about politics. Although the main character was of an opposite political party than I. The obstacles of a personal life that can interfere with the professional life of our president are things most of us never think about. I shall not outline as you need to read for your self. This president also has the usual and unusual problems of getting his programs passed. I promise you will enjoy this novel as Richard North Patterson is as good as than author as any of the others. I strongly recommend the perusal of this novel.

This book was written in 2003 but it reads like it was written yesterday. I was astounded at how relevant it was to the conversation surrounding guns in our country. Framed around an attempt by a U.S. president to enact gun legislation following the deaths of family members, the inner workings of the gun lobby are exposed. Anyone who has ever wondered why we can't enact reasonable gun legislation should read this book.
MEGA FREEDY
This book discusses topics like gun violence and the power of politics and the judicial system. If you like the character of Kerry KIlcannon this is the end of that trilogy. It is a fairly intense book. It will stir emotions on topics of gun control and politics whichever side you choose to support. It has timely subject matter in the wake of the Orlando shootings and in an election year

This is a very convoluted story set in and around Washington DC. I give Mr. Patterson great credit for even imagining this story.

I tended to be a bit bored, since there are so many sub-plots and so many characters, that I wanted the story to move faster for me.

It is still a good read and I find all of his novels far better than most of the others on the market today.

I suggest you read Exile by him first.

A genuinely marvelous work by a most knowledgeable lawyer/author. It confirms the quagmire that government becomes with all of the political conflicts that determine the decisions made, bills passed, and the directions that our government takes. Special interests and lobbyists control the future of our country and so, violence reigns.
The middle of the book gets somewhat bogged down with too much legal argument but the last third picks up momentum again, leading us to reliving the grief by the majority of American citizens over the demise of the Brady Bill which had not yet been defeated when the book was written.

Can't wait for the next book about Kerry Kilcannon - surely there will be more. I totally got "into" the character and although I do not agree with this author's politics, I find it fascinating that his plots are so intriguing and up-to-date with our times.

Patterson and his co-author have given us an entertaining and fast read. Some parts of it have certainly been influenced by the political elite actions in the nation of late.
I have read this novel, thriller, page turner twice and it is still relevant today in the wake of Sandy Hook. A must read fro those who want to dive deep into the muck of the machinations of the NRA and the government.
