I first discovered Val McDermid’s Tony Hill & Carol Jordan series about 7 or 8 years ago and I have been a dedicated fan ever since. The Retribution is not only the latest in the series of seven books but it also reintroduces one of the serial killers from a much earlier book The Wire in the Blood – the evil and twisted Jacko Vance or maybe McDermid is?

Val McDermid is an outstanding writer. She has the awards, bestsellers and devoted readers to prove it. I'm one of the latter and looked forward to another chapter in the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan saga. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the plot -- Jordan's team spends its final weeks together trying to capture one serial killer, while trying to prevent an escaped villain from claiming another victim as he plots to avenge himself on those who got him convicted. It's hard to describe why I found the novel deflating. The plot is masterful and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The familiar characters are there, fully drawn and explored in continued depth. There is a very real sense of impending loss that is magnified by the scheduled dismantling of Jordan's crack team, but painful as that was as a reader, it's not what troubled me about the novel. The ending didn't ring true to me. I simply didn't believe the characters would come to that conclusion. I didn't believe they would do or think what was described. I don't want to ruin the conclusion for other readers, but McDermid's characters always ring true, so whether you like their behavior or not, you believe it. The characters are so fully and deeply drawn that you invest in them emotionally. You sympathize with their struggles and quietly hope they can find their way. It was jarring to not believe, in the end, what some of the characters did -- characters you thought you knew, for better or worse. It will be interesting to see what happens next in the series, but it will be more difficult to fully engage again with characters one can no longer entirely trust. I read all of McDermid novels. She's too good a writer to miss any of her work. At it's conclusion, this one doesn't achieve the gold standard she has set in others.

Dr. Tony Hill's life has hit a new level of contentment. During his hospital stay for a damaged knee, he found out one of the secrets of his life; who his father was. More than that, he discovered that far from despising him as his mother had always said, he had left Tony his expensive house. For the first time, Tony has a place that makes him feel safe and even loved. More significantly, he is about to give up his job working with damaged individuals in a psychiatric hospital and move to live there. The most important person in his life, DCI Carol Jordan, has agreed to live in the house with him as she takes up a new job there.

But plans often go awry. Carol is faced with a new serial killer in her last days at her old job. Street prostitutes are showing up dead and it is clear their murders are the act of the same person. As she works the case with her team, something even worse happens.

Jacko Vance was imprisoned over a decade ago for his crimes. He had kidnapped, tortured and killed seventeen teenage girls although the case against him for those crimes was thrown out. He had been given a life sentence for killing a police officer, a new forensic profiler working under Tony Hill who was the first to see Vance for what he was. The world saw him as a hugely successful TV presenter who had been on his way to winning an Olympic gold medal before the accident that ruined his chances. Once that dream was over he felt free to indulge the desires he had always harbored.

Now Vance has managed to escape custody and it is clear that the main thing on his mind is retribution against the people he holds responsible for his incarceration. That list includes his ex-wife but also Carol Jordan and Tony Hill along with other police officers from the original case. Can the pair find and imprison him again before he can carry out his plans?

The Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series is one of the strongest in the mystery genre. Val McDermid has created two private individuals, both scarred by events in their background, who have found each other and are making the best of the lives they've been given. The tension is always high and the reader must find out what happens next. This book is recommended for mystery readers.

I have devoured the Tony/Carol series byVal McDermid over this past spring and summer! Ms. McDermid writes fast-paced, tightly plotted stories and that in itself is a recommendation for most authors; but the books are so much more fulfilling for the deftly drawn characters. Tales that have characters that one can identify with in some way make for a worthwhile and remarkable story. If you don't care about the characters, the story's a flop (for me anyway). Tony Hill is so well written, I feel as though I know him; his compassion is compelling and his penchant for getting into trouble can make you roll your eyes in frustration if not for the fact that you have to stop yourself from calling out to him to have a care for himself. .Carol Jordan's stubbornness is both exasperating and somehow endearing (except for the times when you want to shake some sense into here and tell her to chill down just a wee bit)--her brilliance as a police officer who actually cares about justice above all and the teamwork that it takes to excel at the job. Same goes for Carol's team - a diverse and interesting group (I love Paula!). The villains are just as extraordinary (in their own appalling different ways). If you have a taste for crime novels, you need to dive into Val McDermid's work.
