Flowers for Algernon is the title of a science fiction short story and a novel by American writer Daniel Keyes. The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960. The novel was published in 1966 and was joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel (with Babel-17).

I read Flowers for Algernon last week for Banned Books week. I had heard about it over the years, but I was never required to read it. Since I read very little science fiction, I never thought I’d enjoy reading it.
Evaluation: Well this is like The Most Depressing Book Ever. But it also made the American Library Association’s list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–1999. But it is a good story, and would make a great selection for a book club. There is much to discuss, from the ethics of experimentation to the way society treats those who are less fortunate, and to the many trenchant observations Charlie makes about status, human nature, friendship, and forgiveness. Have kleenex and/or chocolate on hand; I needed both.
