Safe Harbor was first published in England in 1995, when Izzi was having trouble finding an American outlet. It's a familiar story: the mobster who becomes an informer for the best of reasons (in this case to protect his child) and then enters a witness protection program and goes on to lead a blameless life. What gives the book new life and lots of energy is the way Izzi develops his characters using small strokes of reality. Even the incredibly obnoxious next-door neighbor who accidentally leaks Torrence's true identity is made human because we get to peek into his daily life.

After the publication of Tribal Secrets, he had a dispute with his publisher, and could not publish any books under hi Eugene Izzi was born on March 23, 1953 in Hegewisch, a neighborhood in southwest Chicago. His first novel, The Take, was published in 1987. He went on to publish 18 books.

Before his strange death in 1997 (his body was found hanging outside his Chicago office), Eugene Izzi wrote some of the best crime fiction in recent memory.

Anyone who knows him will tell you that Mark Torrence is a decent man-a dedicated father, a person whose ingrained honesty and integrity is evident in his every action and all his personal dealings.

Originally published in 1995 in the UK, this typically dark Izzi psychothriller makes its US debut posthumously. That Tommy Torelli was a stand-up guy everybody from mob boss Pete Papa on down took on faith. Tough, stoical, he never whined, never complained, and the idea that he might rat to cut himself a deal was laughable. And yet somebody who certainly should have known better got antsy. There was Tommy in police custody, and inexplicably Pete Papa decided extra pressure was warranted

Mark Torrence is a decent man--a dedicated youth counselor; a loving husband and father; a person whose ingrained honesty and integrity is evident in his every action and all his personal dealings. But in a previous New York City life, before he "ratted" and vanished into the Witness Protection Program, Mark Torrence was Tommy Torrelli, an associate of wiseguys who made their bones through violence, extortion, thievery, and worse. Now a world-class hit man with a swollen bank account has agreed to take Torrence/Torrelli down gratis, in order to satisfy inner demons who will only be appeased by vengeance and with blood. As an ever-tightening circle of terror closes in around him, Torrence realizes that his new identity has suddenly become a liability. And the only way he can save his unsuspecting family--the only way he can survive--is by becoming something he truly despises: the man he once was.

Being a big fan of Luanne Rice made me fall in love with the East Coast. I read her books over and over and I feel like I've been there. It's a romantic setting from the first pages to the last! It will never get old. I can only imagine the mist from the sea and the salt, and it's lovely.

Super summer read as one in a series or similar story lines. I live in New England and it is pleasurable to hear about the eastern seaboard and know where the places are in the book.

Bought them all.

I love the authors books. Stories of love and families and life's struggles within. Stories by the sea are my favorite. Thus one had plenty of that❣️

I was rather disappointed with Safe Harbor. The characters were shallow and talked way too much. The story was a bit unbelievable and moved very very slow. It did not measure up to all Rice's other novels, and came nowhere near "Home Fires", "Cloud Nine" or" Summer Light". The story seemed to me like she was trying to crank out a story to get some spending money. Would not recommend it.
I love this book so much, that I have read it several times and each time I read it, it makes me cry.
