Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of their beginning, with Master and Commander, these evocative stories are being re-issued in paperback with smart new livery. This is the tenth book in the series. It is still the War of 1812. Patrick O’Brian takes his hero Jack Aubrey and his tetchy, sardonic friend Stephen Maturin on a voyage as fascinating as anything he has ever written.

He writes arson mysteries, suspense thrillers, and horror novels.

When Terry Levine is called to investigate a triple homicide five hours away. Patrick J. O'Brian is a firefighter and author from Northeastern Indiana, born in upstate New York. He writes arson mysteries, suspense thrillers, and horror novels. His true love, and a subject in nearly half of his books, is the West Baden Springs Hotel located in Indiana's Orange County. The novel′s stirring action follows on from that of The Hundred Days. But Jack is now a senior captain commanding a line-of-battle ship sent out to reinforce the squadron blockading Toulon, and this is a longer, harder and colder war than the dashing frigate action of his early days.

Patrick O'Brian consistently blows other writers out of the water. I will admit it, I am an ultimate Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin series fan boy. I have read that series of novels repeatedly and enjoyed each one every single time. When I learned of this book I immediately bought it.

Patrick O'Brian consistently blows other writers out of the water. I believe this is his sophomore effort and yet the elegance of his prose already surpasses most writers. There is also, for me, a precious "perils of pauline" quality to this narrative.

When Terry Levine is called to investigate a triple homicide five hours away from home, he knows the case won't be routine. A veteran investigator with the New York State Police, Levine quickly suspects he may be dealing with a blossoming serial killer. A task force comprised of state troopers, the FBI, and Erie County Sheriff's Department personnel follow what few leads come their way. With no answers forthcoming, Levine thinks outside the box to track the killer, whose murderous rampage draws the investigators into neighboring counties. A secret from the past holds the key to discovering the killer's identity, though finding him may prove far more difficult. The case takes a personal turn for the investigator when people he knows are targeted by the murderer. A cat and mouse game ensues when the police believe they discover the killer's motive, and his next victim, that sends them scurrying through Buffalo to catch him. Every clue leads to a dead end, leaving Levine and his team wondering if they can catch the mass murderer before he disappears for good.
