The New Girl Friend is yet another perfect collection from Ruth Rendell.

The New Girl Friend is yet another perfect collection from Ruth Rendell. The title story is perfect, as is "Loopy", and "The Convolvulus Clock" (homage to Edgar Allan Poe perhaps), and "The Orchard Walls". One or two tales might just be excellent instead of perfect, but it's a very fine line. The anthology is comprised of 11 stories, all of which are suspenseful, but have more than that going for them. They are studies in human nature and how our foibles can sometimes lead to disastrous results.

RUTH RENDELL This is a work of fiction. She had never really known any other men at all intimately and now if she ever found herself alone with a man she felt awkward and apprehensive. Names and characters are the product of the authors imagination and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. The truth was that she was afraid a man might make an advance to her and the thought of that frightened her very much. For a long while she carried a penknife in her handbag in case she should need to defend herself.

Everyday low prices on a huge range of new releases and classic fiction. I was very interested to see how Rendell did in short form and no disappointment here. A lot of her earlier novels were very lean and this is just sort of like taking that to the extreme. These are still very much Rendellian stories, they have the exact same twisty demented sort of heart at the center of a seemingly normal scenarios. She remains firmly within the genre of psychological dark suspense.

Though Rendell was politically active, she continued to produce books on a regular basis. The New Girlfriend and Other Stories of Suspense, Pantheon, 1986. By 1999, the books published under Rendell's name, including the Wexford series, were having more in common with the books she published as Vine. She even included her intimate knowledge of the House of Lords in the Vine novel The Blood Doctor, published in 2002. The book is narrated by a Lord Nanther, who explores his own family's past and learns of a murder while writing a biography of his great-grandfather. The Copper Peacock and Other Stories, Mysterious Press (New York, NY), 1991.

Several remarkable features distinguished this murder from the others. There was blood on the victim who had fair hair instead of dark, though otherwise strongly resembling Patrick Leston and Dino Facci. Apparently, since Barry Halford had worn no scarf the murderer’s own had been used. But ultimately it was the evidence of a slim dark-haired customer of the Red Lion which led the police to the conclusion that the killer of these seven young men was a woman. And these were very entertaining short visits to her strange and scary world. Additional kudos to the kitschy cover. Fun way to spend a couple of hours. Recommended.
