140 Alan Loy McGinnis read almost a thousand biographies before writing this book. Through his reading he was able to identify certain traits optimistic people possess. McGinnis describes it as a "can-do" philosophy. A quote he takes from William James brings the theme of individual control out even more when he writes "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. McGinnis argues that this mind-set can result in people being elevated to the top of their fields.

Alan Loy McGinnis, author of The Power of Optimism, studied the biographies of over 1000 famous people, and isolated 12 characteristics of the optimistic personality. Among these is: "Optimists look for partial solutions," that is, freed from the tyranny of perfectionism and from paralysis by analysis, they are open to taking small steps towards achieving success. This involved deliberately shifting perspective and looking for the hidden positive in a negative situation: the proverbial silver lining. Look for the gift in the adversity.

Optimists have been shown to be healthier, involved in happier marriages, more affluent, and even to live longer. McGinnis illuminates the power of optimism with the life experiences of "tough-minded" optimists and provides mental techniques for maintaining a cheerful disposition, increasing physical vigor, and creating an aptitude for success and rich, warm relationships.

I have been listening to or attending or reading various experts on sales and other motivational aspects of a professional salesman's life since 1970. I fought internally for many years with various problems that I really didn't understand and there was really no one to diagnose them properly. I had issues with depression, ADD, bad choices of employment and various other factors that I didn't see interlinking in the manner in which they did as all being factors of one basic problem. Author McGinnis exposed many of these programs that I had been to for what they were worth which wasn't much. I was trying to deal with misinformation and transform it into a worthwhile effort of making a living as a commissioned salesman. While I well understand that this book was not written as an expose of bad sales training techniques from decades past, it does shed much light on those subjects by giving good information that illustrates, through use, the bad information that was obtained so long ago. I really wish that I had known what was in this book 30 years ago. If I had then it would have increased my income while saving me a lot of money on wasted seminars and books. Read it and enjoy it. It will enhance your life by demonstrating what true optimism through clear, untinted glasses really is.

This book was recommended as an optional text to a college course of the same name. this isn't just the "power of positive thinking", but discusses the power that optimists have to change their lives for the better, that pessimists won't even try.
It also asserts that you don't have to be born an optimist, it is a skill that can be learned.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been overwhelmed by tragic life events, and would like to regain their optimism, or to be able to reflect back on those events with a healthy perspective.

Great book with obvious reminders I think we all need at times. One you can pick up and just open anywhere and get something out of it.

This is a book that every American needs to read with an open mind and a willingness to change our attitude if a good case is made for changing it!

This was helpful, maybe a little dated. It gave me good ideas on how to be more optimistic.
