I have a 12 year old who was diagnosed pdd-nos at 4. Over many years in seeking help for my son I have had several other documented diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder- mild autism/aspergers- except my son's issues have never seemed all that mild.

In addition, he's received a variety of plus diagnosis-ADHD/ODD/OCD/mood disorder. In the past, these always seemed like throw on stuff- lots of asperger kids can seem inattentive/stubborn/anxious etc. But my son always seemed more so- at least if you go by the literature- than other autistic children although I don't think any version of autism is not complicated.

Mostly my son didn't seem to respond to the interventions recommended for general autism kids. And doing what the autism experts say to do even though its not working left my family feeling exhausted and guilty.

I should mention, I don't truly know what "general autism is"- these children, from my experience are all more child like and human than most dry, technical, dispiriting literature would describe them to be.

In speaking to an advocate recently she mentioned that her child was also a "slash" kid. I have looked for years to books and help related to autism and aspergers as that has been my son's primary diagnosis, but I've also sought out and been lead to information about behavioral difficulties/mental illness in children.

Neither genre, individually through pure description nor suggested interventions seemed to completely fit. Which has been confusing and even more alienating- tough to have autism folks be completely baffled by one's child and frustrating to try to explain to mental health folks the "autism" part of the mental illness.

This is the first book I have ever read that truly sought explore the "both" and interventions that take in to consideration the both- the also.

For my son, I am honestly not so concerned about labels on their own- (except where insurance and special education come in to play) as how descriptions can lead to direction, understanding and knowing how to intervene and support my boy.

I so appreciate Mr. Lynn's focus on the strengths and positives of these children- even ODD!. I worry about my son and his future constantly- but when I am not worrying about that, I enjoy him. He is difficult. He is also hilarious and creative and brilliant and so nuts and so funny and while I still can not totally pin down his primary "slash" diagnosis- it was a relief to me to see that we are not alone- other child like him exist and there are folks like Mr. Lynn who seem to understand and enjoy them.

I can not recommend this book enough- it has given me a lot more confidence and direction in working to help my son continue to build his skills and support his desire for a life and to feel like I have permission fully enjoy all of his gifts.

Good book- buy it.

From an autism teacher: A colleague saw George T. Lynn speak at a conference and highly recommended his book. It is an easy and fascinating read. It is divided into chapters by condition, so you can read only what you are interested in at the time and easily find information. The entire time I was reading it, different students were popping into my mind. It offers great insight into how co-existing conditions manifest in people with Asperger's and helpful ideas for intervention. I have also recommended it to parents and psychologists.

Keeping in the delightful spirit of his previous books, the author helps us to gain the knowledge and tools we need to help our child, always pointing out the wondrous and unique gifts they have, as well as the inner strength that we as parents have to tap into.
This amazing book looks at Asperger Syndrome and the various co-existing disorders that may be present as well. The chapters are specific to each combination, well researched, extremely user-friendly, and filled with the encouragement and belief in our children and ourselves as their parents that George Lynn is famous for. The final chapter lays out a unique, easy to use tool designed by the author called A Character Map. It contains multiple yes/no questions that will help you to see what your child's diagnosis might be and then aid you in going to the specific chapter(s) in the book for help and understanding. This is a wonderful resource alone!
As a parent of a special child and as a therapist, I am so grateful for this marvelous addition to my reference library and return to it continually for guidance, understanding, and inspiration for my own child as well as my clients. I eagerly await George Lynn's NEXT book!!
Perhaps the most striking feature of the ever growing literature on Asperger syndrome, is the paucity of psychological therapeutic exploration. Models of diagnosis and education intervention are dominant, but what about the identity needs of these growing children and their families? Both are in dire need of psychological care and and a framework of meaning. Mr. Lynn has provided another wonderfully courageous and soulful discourse that will be of benefit to all parents and professionals who share their lives with AS children. He understands so well, that diagnosis and symptom are only one perspective in viewing the inherrent mystery and complexity of human psychology. Similarly, he is well grounded in the reality of the therapeutic and medical needs of this population. An excellent and much needed work to augment our psychiatric perspectives.
