Symmetry in Chaos is an important book, a work of art, and a joy to read. -Ian Stewart, author of Why Beauty is Truth.
Symmetry in Chaos is an important book, a work of art, and a joy to read. A classic in the interdisciplinary field of art and mathematics, this very well written book takes the ingenious idea of combining symmetry with chaos to construct stunning images that anyone can enjoy, in particular mathematicians, who can also appreciate the underlying mathematics. Beautiful art cannot be the result of just clever computer graphics
Symmetry in Chaos book. Symmetry, a traditional and highly developed area of mathematics, would seem to lie at the opposite end of the spectrum.

This study has led to the pictures of symmetric chaos that we present throughout this book. Indeed, we have two purposes in writing this book: to present these pictures and to present the ideas of symmetry and chaos-as they are used by mathematicians-that are needed to understand how these pictures are formed.
In Symmetry in Chaos, mathematicians Michael Field and Martin Golubitsky offer an engaging look at where these two fields meet. Field and Golubitsky describe how a chaotic process eventually can lead to symmetric patterns (in a river, for instance, photographs of the turbulent movement of eddies, taken over time, often reveal patterns on average) and they provide clear explanations of the science that lies behind the generation of these pictures. And the images they generate are.

Symmetry and chaos seem unlikely bedfellows; yet Field, from the University of Houston, and Golubitsky, from Ohio State University, have produced a book full of beautiful pictures by combining the two. To quote from the Introduction: Our pictures are created by merging symmetry and chaos. Alan Stevens CMath FIMA Mathematics Today December 2010.

Keywords: Chaos theory, Cybernetics, Mathematics. This is a book for those who are competent mathematicians but also a book of beautiful pictures that have been produced by combining symmetry and chaos. The combination of the two is used to create pictures that in the main exhibit a different character from the more widely known fractal pictures. Many of the pictures generated do surprise the reader by their familiarity.
