This book attempts to provide a comprehensive introduction to those models and methods most likely to be encoun­ tered and used by students in their careers in engineering and the natural sciences. Jay Devore is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at California Polytechnic State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science from the University of California at Berkeley, spent a year at the University of Sheffield in England, and finished his P. in statistics at Stanford University.

One of the worst features of this textbook is organization. Expect some questions to ask you to flip back to a previous question requiring you to flip thru several pages for a single question. Would it have been so difficult to rewrite out a few numbers instead of See Problem #12.

Also question numbering is completely absurd, rather than going from 1-X they for some reason carry the X to the next section example chapter 1-1 would be problems 1-20, chapter 1-2 21-30... etc it only adds to the confusion of this worthless text.

Don't expect to learn anything from the textbook the examples are difficult to understand, and avoids any problems you would expect to see in your lifetime.

One of the best teaching technique is to use real life examples such as calculating the probability and statistics of games of chance. Such as probably of blackjack hands, dice rolling, this textbook manages to avoid everything that has to with things like that.

Perhaps I'm biased, because I had the third worst professor I had ever had teaching probability and statistics, but the fact that he chose this book to teach it with certainly did not help his case. This book is terrible. If you aren't someone who is absolutely thrilled and astonished by mathematics, and can't wait to go home to try out that new equation you learned today, then this book can't help you. It's a dull read that explains everything in a very mathematical sense, often leaving you asking what in the world just happened. Now, don't misunderstand me, I am an engineer, I know the math well. However, nobody I've ever met really enjoys having things explained in a purely mathematical sense... okay, I did have this roommate who got a BA in Mathematics and Physics in 2 years, but he was the rare exception. There are much better books out there to learn probability and statistics from, especially if you're learning it on your own. If this book is a mandatory text for a class, pray that whoever is teaching it is a much easier to understand than this book.

I had ordered this book on Sep 8 2010 and immediately sent an email to the seller asking about the condition of the book, but got no response. Then sent another email asking for order status, but still got no reply from the seller.

Then after waiting for a week, I decided to cancel the item and file a claim for my refund.

I was enrolled in a class and needed this book for that class. But because of this seller's laziness I lost a week being without a book to study.

So my sincere suggestion to anybody wanting to buy from this seller is to look some place else.

I am really upset that I had lost a week during my course and more sad that the seller did not even have the courtesy to reply to my mails.

It is an old edition but I knew that. For $6 (including shipping) you can't go wrong, especially since the current edition is $200. There's a concordance available somewhere for the problems so there's no real point in spending that much on such a low level textbook.

We are currently two chapter into the book and I have found the text to be nearly useless. There are solid proofs of the basic computations and examples are given. Unfortunately the formulas are extremely abstract while at the same time using mathematical jargon someone who has not taken statistics before would have little to no experience with. Some of the examples are great at helping you out on the first part of problems, but on parts c,d,e,f and g there isn't a whole lot to go off of. But as always universities never choose books based on how well it teaches a student, but normally by the number of editions the publisher puts out and the price of the book. If possible I would have a solutions manual on hand for homework.

I had to use this book for an undergrad course in Prob & Stats at Univ. of Idaho. I'm in Comp.Sci and I can tell you one thing..I don't think this book is targeted for students who aren't doing a degree in Math/Stats or Physics..
Things aren't explained clearly and lack clarity. The book tries to use professional level examples and problems but forgets to realize that students from different majors may have a tough time dealing with other fields..Like for me, a CS guy, when the book had a problem on dynamics..I was basically unable to apply my Prob. & Statistics knowledge to that problem..cause i don't even know how to begin dealing with it..
I think it'll be good for reference when you've completed the course (using another book I hope)..Cause it really shouldn't be used as a First Semester College text in Stats..
The last thing I want to say is that as a CS guy..Probabilty needs more stress than statistics...i don't know about the other engineerings..
