I have taught adults with math anxiety for many years and use many of the techniques described in this book. They work! The book seems well written, and should be helpful for the math-anxious. The author has a great deal of experience working with math-anxious students at a community college. The intended audience is definitely college students, which makes some parts of the book less useful for the adults that I work with. The section on "Effective Math Study Skills" might be overwhelming to many; following all the prescriptions sounds like a full-time job.

To Ms. Arem's recommendations, I would add that one should do aerobic exercise regularly to reduce stress. I also recommend Brain Gym exercises, which one can find out about online.

I bought Mastering Mathematics How to Be a Great Math Student at the same time. I read it in 2 days and came away with easy useful practical applications that can be immediately put into use to improve my learning experience and grades in all of my classes. Then, I read Conquering Math Anxiety. It is a chore to read and cluttered with time consuming psychological exercises that may be useful for next year or the year after. Basically, there is not much of immediate useful relevance to math or any subject until late in the book (starting at chapter 7).

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has any type of academic anxiety, not just math. It's a little cheesy at times, but if you follow what it says, you will change your attitude about math. I just got a 100 on a math test for the first time since grade school (I'm a college student). At any rate, with the low price, it's a definite yes.

This book and the class taught by Professor Arem in Tucson,Arizona. This book is without a doubt, the reason I graduated from college. I struggled with math for years and I was able to finally conquer my fear of math. Taking this course, allowed me to understand the concepts of math and to take it slow. I was able to change things about my learning that abled me to see what I was doing wrong. It wasnt that I didn't know math, but it was that I never learned it in the first place. Kiddos to Ms. Arem, she also is an outstanding psychology professor. This book is for anyone at any age. I'm currently 48 and I recommend this book to who ever can finally feel like succeeding instead of dreading numbers. I actually can say, "I love math"! With the right attitude, and starting from scratch, it made me feel like I can accomplish any problem. Remember you are not born knowing math, you only learn what you have been taught. And bad habits and fears are taught with bad teachers. So, start new and learn, it isn't your fault and learning from a good teacher will instill good math study habits. It is never too late.
