The book provides a very good working introduction to Splus and programming in S. It is geared towards those who will be using the command line interface. There were enough examples to help me to begin to do fairly complex statistical analysis in just a few hours of starting work with a large database. You're left trying to figure out what commands to type in. This book may be better as a reference guide for a more experienced user.
