Xanthippe Augerot’s Atlas of Pacific Salmon provides dozens of maps depicting numerous aspects of Pacific salmon throughout their natural range. The text is well and is further supported by excellent charts, graphs and photographs. A truly incredible amount of information is packed into 120 pages. An additional 23 pages of references and footnotes plus a user-friendly index add to this book’s usefulness as a source for further exploration of given topics.

Seven species of genus Oncorhynchus are treated: Masu (Cherry Salmon), Steelhead, Pink, Chum, Sockeye, Coho and Chinook. Although all (or virtually all) areas historically inhabited by Pacific salmon are touched on, the maps and text chiefly focus on Japan, China, Russia, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. The book is divided into six chapters: The Fish, The People, The Place, Distribution and Risk of Extinction, Threats to Biodiversity and Migration. This book is beautifully illustrated with photographs, illustrations, and the most detailed distribution maps I have ever seen. The design of the book makes it a perfect coffee top book and it's content makes it both a perfect introduction to the world of salmon while at the same time a valuable scientific reference.

This book is very accessible to non-scientists, if you are looking for a book about how salmon, man, and the enviroment interact this is a great book. The title sounds a little academic but it can be appreciated by anyone with interest in salmon. And anyone who flips through the book will be taken in by the beauty of this book.

This is an excellent overview of the issue of salmon management in the wider Pacific. It's a great perspective because, at least in my experience, salmon consideration is so often based around land-based geographic locations and that does not give enough credit to the duration and scope involved in a salmon's oceanic lives (which is the major part of certain species lives)!
