Readers who enjoy the outdoors will appreciate this fine book.

Authors Erwin and Peggy Bauer have included 120 full-color photos taken over 50 years of hunting deer with a camera. But this is more than a coffee-table picture book. They show whitetails in a wide range of habitats from swamp and semi-desert to farms and woodlands. It includes a lively, well-written text by Erwin Bauer, with opening chapters on the evolution, distribution, life history, and behavior of whitetails. He tells the fascinating story of these tough, resilient creatures "super survivors" that have adapted to human impacts on their native environments. This deer, with a population of over 20 million, is the most abundant of New World large mammals.

In their studies, they found that many skilled outdoors people still used the white-tail and other animals to predict the weather because of their, "uncanny ability to anticipate a sharply rising or falling barometer" (Bauer & Bauer, 1993, p. 64). In trying to gather more empirical data on the subject, they consulted Dave Morris, manager of a Georgia hunting preserve.

This book is Classic Bauer, filled with overview of facts, behavior, and conservation, as well as stories from Erwin's personal experiences. I read the book completely, was hoping some really good information but not very thorough. It might be good for a novice but
not much for a researcher or hunter wanting to really know more about what the behaviors for hunting purposes.

The photographs in this book are excellent, as good as they can get. In the text throughout the pictures, there is much information about the life and habits of these fine animals, actually about all you'd want to know. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who has an appreciation for these fine animals.

Not a good book, unless you don't know anything about elk. I'm very disappointed with it.
