Sharks belong to the taxonomic class Chondrichthyes, also known as cartilaginous fishes. Mexico is home to a broad biodiversity of shark species, and more than half of the sharks in Mexican waters are distributed in the Mexican Pacific, with over 62 species recorded. These fishes have flexible cartilage with no bone present in the skeleton, fins, or scales ( Ebert et a. 2013;Klimley, 2013), except for trace amounts of acellular bone at the base of the denticles.
